In the past, professional-grade automotive detailing was something you could only get by booking an appointment with a detail shop or hiring a mobile detailer. This has changed in recent years as the DIY detailing movement has exploded — driven by passionate enthusiasts, we now have easy-to-access pro tools, and advanced car care chemistry available to everyone.
At Pal Automotive Specialties, we’ve watched this trend grow from a niche hobby into a full-blown culture. Whether you’re a weekend warrior or a meticulous daily driver owner, today’s detailing products make it possible to achieve pro-level results at home.
How The DIY Detailing Movement is Growing
-
Access to Professional Products
Once upon a time, only industry insiders could buy high-performance compounds, ceramic coatings, or foam cannons. Today, brands release retail-friendly versions with similar formulas to their pro-only counterparts — allowing you to use the same kind of technology your favorite detailer trusts. -
Online Learning Resources
Between TikTok, YouTube, and detailing forums, you can find step-by-step tutorials on everything from two-bucket washes to multi-stage paint correction. Many enthusiasts are learning faster than ever thanks to real-time demos and expert tips. Be sure to Check out Pal Automotive on all social platforms where we also provide you with industry knowledge on all the latest products and tools in the detail world. -
Cost Savings Over Time
While the initial investment in pro-grade gear can be high sometimes even higher than booking a detail appointment; the flip side is that by doing it yourself, you’re saving on repeat service costs while partaking in the hobby that is extending the life of your vehicle’s paint, trim, and interior. -
The Satisfaction Factor
There’s something addictive about transforming your own ride. For many, DIY detailing is more than maintenance — it’s therapy. We're all guilty of spending countless time scrolling through detailing ASMR videos, and now that all these products are available to everyone giving your car its own spa day, and you some therapy has never been easier!

Building Your DIY Detailing Kit
If you want to jump into DIY with confidence, we recommend starting with these essentials:
-
Wash: Foam cannon + pH-balanced shampoo will cover a majority of detail jobs. Wash mitts, buckets, wheel and detail brushes help get the detail moving, without them they make the wash step a bit more difficult.
-
Decontaminate: Iron remover + clay bar or clay mitt: Note: Decontamination steps are only recommended for use on heavily soiled vehicles. Chemical and Manual Decontamination methods can be harsh on paint that is not heavily soiled so be sure to do a thorough inspection of the paints condition before this step.
-
Protect: Ceramic spray sealant or polish. After a wash and decontamination the paint surface will be left bare and exposed to the elements, it is highly recommended to apply some form of a protection layer on if paint correction is not apart of the detail. Polishes can be applied by hand or with a polisher for better results. While a Spray Sealant will have a much easier and quicker application process while still providing protection.
-
Interior: Designated interior cleaners like Xpress by P&S or LVP by 3D are tried and true products that deliver pro grade results. For more difficult stains or messes an All-purpose cleaner may be better suited for that situation. microfiber towels, and soft brushes are also a huge help in terms of cleanup.
-
Finishing Touches: Tire and trim dressings, glass cleaner, and interior scents put the finishing touches on any detail.
This kit covers the basics and leaves room to expand into paint correction, polishing, and ceramic coating as your skills grow.
The DIY detailing movement is here to stay — and it’s giving drivers the power to protect, maintain, and enhance their vehicles from the comfort of their own driveway.
With the right products and techniques, you can match the shine and protection of a professional detail while enjoying the satisfaction of doing it yourself.
